    Tasha Starr's Skills (Done)

Post by Tasha Starr on Tue Dec 17, 2013 4:29 am

Skill Name: T'ai Chi Ch'uan (Tai Chi)
    Skill Type: Martial Art
Skill Information: T'ai Chi Ch'uan is a very elegant, flowing style of martial arts, one known as an 'internal martial art', that focuses on breathing and posture, along with flowing movements to create a style that uses minimal effort for shocking damage output. The style, whose name translates to 'supreme ultimate fist', is designed to maximize longevity in a fight without sacrificing the stopping power that most more straight-forward arts possess, which makes it somewhat superior. It is practiced in slow-motion, however in application it has quite explosive speed behind it.

Most, if not all, of the strikes in Tai Chi are done with an open hand; pushing with the palm or striking with the edge of the hand. This actually makes the strikes quicker, with very little drop in actual effectiveness, along with the added benefit of not hurting your knuckles every time you strike. Tai Chi mainly focuses on diverting an opponents attack and either disabling the weapon (or limb) they used, or striking and throwing the opponent away, using only a small amount of your own energy since most of the movement was done by the attacker. Tai Chi mainly excels at defense, as it uses well-practiced and masterfully crafted defense techniques that include offensive components, so that defending and attacking at the same time can be achieved.
    Skill Strengths:

    • It takes less energy to perform Tai Chi techniques than most standard martial arts, allowing practitioners to fight longer without sacrificing effectiveness.
    • Though Tai Chi is practiced in slow motion, it is actually quite speedy in application. Being one of the faster martial arts, it is difficult, if not outright impossible, for the average human to keep up with a Tai Chi user's movements in combat.
    • Tai Chi's basic attacks (non-technique using combat) are very versatile, and can be used in many scenarios, even outside of combat; though they normally focus on the opponent making the first move.

    Skill Weaknesses:

    • Tai Chi requires a calm state of mind, and a focused one. As such, if the user is in any emotional distress, such as anger or fear, they cannot use techniques from the style as effectively.
    • Tai Chi is a very close-ranged style, requiring one to wait for the opponent to strike, most of the time, but including some actual offensive maneuvers, which are usually used to press the attack until the opponent tries to counter. Being so close-ranged in it's very nature, most long ranged fighters will eventually overwhelm them if they can't close the distance.
    • The user must be able to keep a constant motion with their arms; having them bound makes all techniques impossible to use.

    Level 1 Abilities:
Ability Lvl 1 Name: Tai Chi Stepping
    Ability Lvl 1 Type: Support/Defense
Ability Lvl 1 Cooldown: 1 post
Ability Lvl 1 Description: The user takes a neutral stance, legs parallel to each other and feet pointed forward, then steps forward repeatedly by making swift arcs with their feet, covering as much distance as if they were jogging about half as fast as they could run, but creating the seeming effect of 'swaying' back and forth. It basically allows them to dodge attacks more efficiently while moving in a (more or less) straight line. It also makes the less perceptive folk out there forget that the martial artist is actually moving forward, rather than just dodging.
Ability Lvl 1 Range: User travels forward between 5 and 20 feet over 1 post.

    Ability Lvl 1 Strengths:

    • Increases user's ability to dodge ranged attacks while at the same time closing the distance between them and the opponent.
    • Allows the user to quickly step around behind a close-ranged attacker, opening up the attacker's back for their own counter-attack

    Ability Lvl 1 Weaknesses:

    • Attacks that come in horizontally, like a blade swipe or a rokushiki rankyaku, are impossible to dodge with this technique, meaning the martial artist must either not use the technique at all, or stop in the middle of it, often resulting in dis-balancing them.
    • Movement speed and range are both limited, only allowing for straight-line movement at half the user's running speed, which means it can be easily evaded at a range.

Ability Lvl 1 Name: Calming Breathe
    Ability Lvl 1 Type: Supplementary
Ability Lvl 1 Cooldown: 2 posts
Ability Lvl 1 Description: The user takes a deep breathe and focuses his/her energy into his/her diaphragm, taking a lowered stance and re-focusing on the battle. This allows them to immediately calm themselves down and focus on their fight, in case they get distracted or someone tries to scare them off.

    Ability Lvl 1 Strengths:

    • The user may calm themselves down at any point, dispelling fear, rage, confusion, or any form of distraction.

    Ability Lvl 1 Weaknesses:

    • The move is very stationary, leaving the user completely open for an attack from the opponent.

    Ability Lvl 1 Name:River's Flow
    Ability Lvl 1 Type:Defensive
Ability Lvl 1 Cooldown: 1 post
Ability Lvl 1 Description: The user takes a broad stance in response to an opponent's attack, leaning in and placing their hands on the attacker's wrist and waist. The user then pulls back viciously, standing up and arcing their arms over their head, flipping the victim of this technique onto the ground and doing moderate damage.
Ability Lvl 1 Range: 1 foot

    Ability Lvl 1 Strengths:

    • This technique is one of the quickest and easiest out of a Tai Chi user's repertoire, simultaneously defending against any close ranged attack that doesn't use a weapon and damaging the opponent that tried to attack them, leaving said opponent on the ground afterwards.

    Ability Lvl 1 Weaknesses:

    • As previously stated, this works on close-ranged attacks that don't use weapons, making this technique useless against anyone who uses a weapon to attack.
    • This technique can be avoided if the attack is unexpected, unseen, or is an especially fast technique.

    Ability Lvl 1 Name: Redirection
    Ability Lvl 1 Type: Defensive/Offensive
Ability Lvl 1 Cooldown: 5 posts
Ability Lvl 1 Description: The user sways out of the way of an incoming close-ranged weapon attack, stepping inward at the same time to cramp the weapon user, eliminating the chance of a follow up strike as the Tai Chi artist bends towards the person, sliding his/her arm against the opponent's attacking arm and flowing it towards the opponent, forcing the opponent to then attack themselves with his/her own weapon. This move can also be done to disarm the opponent.
Ability Lvl 1 Range: 3 feet

    Ability Lvl 1 Strengths:

    • The attacker is redirected, forcing them to damage themselves rather than the user of this technique.
    • Can be used to disarm or to counter attack any close-ranged weapon user.

    Ability Lvl 1 Weaknesses:

    • This technique has a long cooldown, and low overall damage output, making it mainly used as an attempt to disarm the opponent.
    • Only works on melee weapon users; completely useless against unarmed combatants and ranged weapon fighters.
    • Does not work on chain weapons such as flails, kusarigama, or weighted chains.

Ability Lvl 1 Name: Roaring Tide
    Ability Lvl 1 Type: Supplementary
Ability Lvl 1 Cooldown: 2 (Duration: 4 posts)
Ability Lvl 1 Description: The user takes one post to execute a particular breathing technique (in through the nose, hold, drop the breath to your gut, pull hands in, then slowly push hands out as you release the breathe) that puts them in the 'tai chi' state of mind, increasing their power and reflexes each by 10 points for 4 posts.

    Ability Lvl 1 Strengths:

    • This increase in stats can be crucial to winning a fight, as it has the chance of giving you that extra edge you need over the opponent.

    Ability Lvl 1 Weaknesses:

    • This Technique requires a post of concentration before the bonuses go into effect, leaving the user open to an attack.

For the first ability, and the following defensive abilities, please state a range. Even though the defensive abilities may be melee, a close ranged attack could differ from 3 cm to 4m. As for the dodging technique, you've stated yourself that it has a range, but you haven't specified the range.

For the first ability again, elaborate on how much the movement speed is limited by.

    Roaring Tide:

As of ongoing discussion on buff spells, a maximum of +10 for a Level 1 ability which buffs two stats has been decided upon. Therefore, you will only get +10 Reflex and +10 Stamina. You could, however, limit the buff to one stat and gain +15 in that respective stat.

Since you're having a movement deficit in the first ability, it wouldn't make sense for you to have such a long range of motion. Limit it to a maximum of 20 feet.

And for both the defensive abilities, please give possible ways to dodge them. They would count as weaknesses. Examples could be: fast attacks, weapons which are connected via chain, so don't have the same pressure distribution between them, etc.
